Fractice Mandelbrot deep zoom to 2^316 (bigger than the universe!) - Chris Korda
This is an extremely deep dive into the Mandelbrot set, to 2^316 (binary). In decimal that's 1E+95, or 1 with 95 zeros after it. The coordinates are identical to a similar deep zoom movie posted to YouTube by user metafis, but my version has higher resolution (648x480), and was rendered with 2x antialiasing (four pixels computed for every output pixel). It also has an improved palette, similar to the one used by the Wikipedia Mandelbrot page...

Experimental investigation of passive infrared ice detection for helicopter applications - Dershowitz, Adam
A technique is proposed to remotely detect rotor icing on helicopters. Using passive infrared (IR) thermometry, it is possible to detect the warming caused by latent heat released as supercooled water freezes. During icing, the ice accretion region on the blade leading edge will be warmer than the uniced trailing edge, resulting in a chordwise temperature profile characteristic of icing. Preliminary tests were conducted on a static model in the NASA Icing Research Tunnel for a variety of wet (gl...

Thermal Nondestructive Evaluation Report: Inspection of the Refurbished Manipulator Arm System in the Manipulator Development Facility at Johnson Space Center 10-12 January 2001 - Cramer, K. Elliot
On 4 December 2002, a failure of the Refurbished Manipulator Arm System (RMAS) occurred in the Manipulator Development Facility (MDF) at Johnson Space Center. When the Test Director commanded a should pitch maneuver to lift the arm from its payload bay pedestal, the yaw controls failed. This, coupled with a gravitational forces (due to the angle of the shoulder joint with respect to vertical), resulted in uncontrolled arm motion...

Active Suppression of Aerodynamic Instabilities in Centrifugal Compressors - Fleeter, Sanfor
The operating range of a compressor is bounded by the surge and choke lines on a performance map. The barrier posed by the surge line is of particular interest due to its proximity to the maximum efficiency points of the compressor. Namely, the surge line separates the regions of stable and unstable compressor operation. As a result, adequate surge margin from the operating line must be provided, resulting in the machine not operating at maximum efficiency...

Hollow cathode operation at high discharge currents - Friedly, Verlin Jo
It was shown that ion thruster hollow cathode operation at high discharge current levels can induce reduced thruster lifetimes by causing cathode insert overheating and/or erosion of surfaces located downstream of the cathode. The erosion problem has been particularly baffling because the mechanism by which it occurs has not been understood. The experimental investigation described reveals the energies of the ions produced close to the cathode orifice can be several times the anode-to-cathode po...

The Hamiltonian structure of Dirac's equation in tensor form and its Fermi quantization - Reifler, Frank
Currently, there is some interest in studying the tensor forms of the Dirac equation to elucidate the possibility of the constrained tensor fields admitting Fermi quantization. We demonstrate that the bispinor and tensor Hamiltonian systems have equivalent Fermi quantizations. Although the tensor Hamiltonian system is noncanonical, representing the tensor Poisson brackets as commutators for the Heisenberg operators directly leads to Fermi quantization without the use of bispinors.
